Be Happy You Have the Good Cancer

Psalm 121

 lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Is there really a “good” cancer. The word cancer means a harmful unwanted growth that can kill healthy cells. How can a word like good go with this invading disease. Furthermore what am I missing when person after person…doctor after doctor tell me that “yeah, it is tough living with no thyroid…but be thankful you have the good cancer.”

Yes…I have had thyroid cancer for seven years now, so why this new temper tantrum. My body decided to not listen to my thyroid replacement meds…and life became overwhelming. What does this look like? My hair falls out…my skin is scaley, and painful to the touch. Simple daily tasks seem impossible. Oh yeah my stomach also feels like there are gremlins living in me. I either sleep too much or can’t fall asleep. Then without warning I break into tears because no one loves me or maybe it is the day that I think the gremlins invading me are about to overthrow me. Why did I share all this…Because I can’t make this better.

Yes, my help, refuge and love comes from the Lord. The Psalm has always helped me to refocus on what I do have. It also is a great reminder that God knows all ready what you are going through. He has your back!

It is my prayer that you take time to admit when life has gotten overwhelming and know that God loves you! He will meet you in the middle of any circumstances. He is your strength, your comforter  and most of all the mighty physician. Rest in His arms!
