Sustaining Grace

2 Cor 9:7-10

or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Praying for sustaining grace is so vital to all of us regardless of whether there is a disability. Walking with the Lord is glorious, but often confusing, challenging and just not the easy way. God reminds us time and time again to keep our eyes on Jesus and keep pressing forward! Our reward is heaven!

The disabled may struggle even more due to their isolation from the local church. Church offers believers an opportunity to let our hair down and get rejuvinated. Due to a number of reasons, most disabled people feel rejected by the church and therefore do not have this weekly dose of fellowship to help keep their eyes on the prize.

Paul encourages us through these verses that God will totally take care of us even those of us with disabilities. Paul shares that he has a thorn in his flesh that torments him daily. He pleaded with God to take this infirmity away. God reassured Paul that he would not only take care of Paul, but that his power is amplified through his weakness.

What an incredible blessing. Our daily struggles with physical or mental impairments brings God glory! Paul role modeled to us that we should not have sour grapes about this, but instead he tells us to “delight” in our weaknesses, hardships, persecutions and all the other negativity attributed to a disabled child of God.

Sustaining grace is crucial for our self preservation through these trials. Recently I read “1000 gifts” by Ann Voskamp. This book is a fantastic tool to help promote that delight that Paul mentions.

The author tells of how a few years back she took the thanksgiving challenge and this lead her to start writing down all the blessings in her life. She refers to these blessings as gifts. These gifts are anything that give us hope! The author asserts that an incredible transformation will occur if you take time every day to list the gifts in your life.

I started focusing on the gifts in my life especially when I am feeling frustrated or vulnerable! It is an excellent way to keep the bitterness at bay. God will become even more real in our lives if we give him the credit due for all the wonderful gifts that surround us every second of our life.

I pray you find peace in sustaining grace to walk through all your daily trials. I also pray you find peace in noticing all the blessings in your life.
